Work in progress 2022

Highlights from 2022

The VITA project partners are representative of almost 400 hectares of surface:

  • 6 farms belonging to the Consorzio dei Vini e dei Colli Tortonesi, with 64.5 ha of surface;
  • the Cantina Sociale di Tortona, representative of 150 members, with about 250 hectares;
  • 5 farms producing the Langhe and Roero, with 95 ha of surface;

For a total of:

  • 26,000 quintals of grapes produced in 2022
  • 1,343,000 bottles bottled in 2022
  • 1.321.000 bottles sold in 2022
  • 9,091 hectoliters of wine sold in bulk in 2022
  • 97 total people involved (average of 8 people per company) in 2022, in addition to the 150 members of the Cantina Sociale di Tortona

A network of 18 agrometeorological stations was created, connected to Horta’s servers, which, through algorithm-based forecast models, estimate the development of the main 4 fungal diseases and 3 harmful insects. The network of stations allowed, therefore, the creation of the relative map;

3 training sessions were held on the functionalities of the DSS (Decision Support Systems) vite.net® and on the interpretation of the outputs, as well as the calibration parameters of the DSS models to the specificities of the territory (meteorological data, phenological phases of the plant, stage of development of pathogens and parasites and cultivation operations), to at least one operator per partner farm;

® Vite.net was activated to the partner farms and virtual copies of the vineyards (8 main varieties of the territory) were created. Therefore, prescriptive indications were sent to the farms, based on the indications of the DSS, aimed at improving sustainability performance in the vineyard, i.e. reducing the number of monitoring and treatments carried out compared to those established (up to 1-2 systemic treatments less than conventional and with a more targeted timing);

In all, over 100 hectares of vineyards were managed with the support of the DSS, with about 500 plants of typical Piedmontese varieties and about 18 monitoring per site, and, in the two years, there were more than 15,000 views of the vite.net® system by the 11 farms and technical partners of the Operational Group;

The identification of a list of members of the Cantina Sociale di Tortona is being completed, who will be given access to the vite.snap web-app graphically customized for the VITA project. A concise guide will be distributed to members on the use of simplified DSS;

Data were collected to draw up the zonal phytosanitary bulletins (40 bulletins, 20 per year, drawn up weekly) to be delivered to the winemakers to warn them when to treat, with relative technical indications of intervention, accompanied by the map containing the position and GPS coordinates of the vineyards of the winery members involved;

A participatory monitoring was carried out on 5 companies (3 conventional farms and 2 organic farms), aimed at measuring, on 26 samples, the potential contamination of the resulting water from the internal and external washing of the spraying machines and raising awareness among operators in this regard (Anadiag and Unicatt);

Questionnaires were distributed to member companies of the Consorzio dei Colli Tortonesi, the Consorzio del Roero and the Cantina Sociale di Tortona (20 questionnaires for a total of 136 ha of total vineyard area) to understand the perception and attitudes of operators regarding the management of pesticides and therefore identify potential critical issues;

For a sustainable use of plant protection products at company level were drawn up and the 7 key points for the correct management of wastewater from spraying machines were elaborated.
